World Lion Day 2015: Exhibition opens at Christian the Lion’s former London home

An exhibition featuring previously unseen photographs of Christian the Lion taken by Derek Cattani was opened today by one of his original owners, John Rendall, now a trustee of the George Adamson Wildlife Preservation Trust, to mark World Lion Day 2015.
The pine furniture store Sophistocat, now situated on the Wandsworth Bridge Road in London, hosted Christian for one year in 1969 after John purchased him from Harrods department store with fellow Australian ‘Ace’ Bourke. In 1970 Christian was successfully rehabilitated in Kenya.
Despite his new life in the wild, Christian did not forget his owners and the footage of their reunion has now been viewed over 100 million times on YouTube.
John, who bought Christian as a 3-month old cub, said:
“Conservationists all across the globe are today celebrating the glory of lions and their fascination for people worldwide. The celebration has been attracting increasing support as people realise that lions are increasingly in danger of extinction.
When we took Christian to George Adamson in Kenya, there were an estimated 400,000 lions in Africa, over 30,000 of them in Kenya. Today there are possibly only 20,000 on the whole African continent, and less than 1,500 in Kenya… fewer than the combined Rhino population in Africa!”
