Emma Beswetherick at Piatkus/Little, Brown has signed two books by debut author Gilly MacMillan. Nelle Andrew at PFD brokered the six-figure, world English deal. Rachel Mills at PFD and Kate Hibbert at Piatkus are handling translation and US rights respectively.
BURNT PAPER SKY is a psychological suspense about a missing child, and a story about how social media can turn in on an innocent but emotionally unhinged mother.
Piatkus will publish the novel in 2015 as a superlead, a slot that features only one new author a year and that launched Richard and Judy-bestselling authors Rosamund Lupton, Lisa Ballantyne and Saskia Sarginson – the factor that convinced the author not to auction the novel, despite receiving other offers.
Beswetherick describes MacMillan‘s writing as “flawless, and the sense of anxiety and anticipation around the devastating first days after the son’s disappearance is spot on. It’s the kind of book you want to press into the hands of everyone you know, because it is so completely unputdownable. I also haven’t read a novel presented in this way before, with its clever use of websites and media, blogs and transcripts, interspersing the view of the public with the personal torment of the family and the wide chasm in between.”
Auctions are ongoing in Germany and France. Ambo Anthos pre-empted the title in the Netherlands.
